Description:
The lamp's body is made entirely out of wood, assembled from more than 100 small laser cut modules forming a 3D object, without using any screws or adhesive. Can be operated in the same way as a traditional lamp. The product changes from a highly decorative object into a source that generates ambiental light, projecting the seed of life pattern from it's sides on the room walls in which it is exposed. The body of the lamp can be considered a wooden origami, having some advantages over the traditional origami models that are made from paper such as lasting durability and improved accuracy. It was made with laser cut technology.
It was conceived in 3D as a Truncated Icosahedron inscribing the seed of life symbol on it's faces. The modules that form this structure were laser cut from a 4 mm thick plywood and assembled by hand. The product has more than 100 modules, 32 big modules of 2 kinds and over 90 connecting modules. The lampshade's diameter has 280 mm considering the sphere that inscribes it. The maximum bulb diameter that fits inside the lamp is 60 mm and for safety reasons we recommend only led light bulbs. It comes with the following accessories: a metal ceiling rose, a 1.5 m textile coated cord-set and a metal light-bulb socket.
The hardest part designing this product was conceiving the mobile lid. It had several optimization design stages before we managed to make it entirely out of wood and functioning properly. It is designed with a 3 point pivotal locking system, with each point consisting of 3 wooden parts.
For the structure of the lamp we researched the Archimedean solids, a class of complex geometrical shapes. Then we selected one of this solids and measured the ratio between diferent parts in it. As for the pattern used to envelop this shape we chosed the Seed of Life symbol and researched the history and the semnification of this symbol. We merged the geometrical structure with the symbolism of the patterns to obtain this product. The research was made from internet sources and technical drawing books using a lot of geometry. The result is an everyday product shaped as a sculptural piece.
