Timaeus Fire Pit Project
The project is developed entirely by Atelier Varadinum, starting with 2d and 3d concept and design, followed by the engineering schematics for the geometrical plane joints, continued with 3d print, and finally metal cut and foundry. The project is conceived such so no part requires bending, its entirely thought for jointing plane parts. The production process combine modern with medieval techniques, waterjet cutting & 3d printing with sand moulding & iron casting.
Our research pointed that in antiquity the philosopher Plato has associated in his work Timaeus the basic elements of life: earth, water, air, and fire with a class of geometrical shapes.
Three of these pieces are the basic structure supports on the horizontal plane. Each of this support pieces has
a symbol that represents one of the three primary elements of life, complementary to fire: earth, air and water. After the binding of the main three supports, the remaining 24 pieces of 7 different types, binds only in a certain order.
The fire bowl was conceived in a 3d software, was made a 3d printed mould and then metal casted. The object has the role to enclose the fire pit's body by simply resting on the body on 5 points.
For the base of the fire pit we used the model of the tetrahedron, the shape conected with the fire element in the dialogue of Plato. For the symbols of earth, water and air that appear on the three support elements we were inspired from the images of this symbols as they are represented in The Fifth Element movie. The research was made from internet sources.
Finally Timaeus Fire Pit is a highly decorative project with a purification and regeneration symbolism.
